Cosaruciaru beans from Scicli

Scicli's Cosaruciaru Beans are grown in the heart of Baroque Sicily, in the province of Scicli, and the bean is characterized by its sweet flavour , from which it takes its name "sweet thing".


Scicli's Cosaruciaru Beans are cream colored with brown streaks;

cooking is quick (after soaking) and the peel is very soft.

This bean is suitable, in addition to traditional Sicilian recipes, for the preparation of creams paired with fish and shellfish.

Sicilian Beans Cosaruciaru - History

Until the beginning of the twentieth century, Sicilian Cosaruciaru beans were an important production for Sciclitan farmers.

In the following decades, cultivation decreased due to low yields and the introduction of greenhouse cultivation. From the seventies onwards, the casola cosaruciara was cultivated only by a few elderly farmers.

In 2012, fortunately, six farmers invested in the relaunch of Sicilian Cosaruciaru beans by coming together in a consortium of producers.

Cosaruciaru is a non-climbing annual plant with two production cycles , grown in the open field according to traditional methods.

It is harvested twice a year, in the spring, summer and autumn.

The Sicilian Cosaruciaru beans harvested in the summer are not sold but used as seeds for the following season.

The legumes intended for sale and consumption are harvested between mid-October and November.

What distinguishes Sicilian Cosaruciaru beans are their particular creamy-white color with small brown streaks around the hilum and, naturally, their sweet flavor which earned them the name by which they are still called today.


The Terravecchia family, producers of our Cosaruciaru di Scicli beans , has been known in Sicily since the 1950s for various entrepreneurial activities, among which the production of chickpea flour stands out, an essential ingredient of the famous Palermo ''panelle''.

For thirty-five years now, in the new role of selectors, packers and distributors of dried legumes, it has represented a reality in the Sicilian distribution panorama, proudly carried forward by a new generation of women, with the support and experience of family members.

From the idea of ​​selecting and re-evaluating the excellence of Sicilian agricultural production, which risked disappearing forever, the ''sun and taste of Sicily'' line was born :

selection that on a gastronomic level can represent this wonderful island in the world through its smells, its fragrances and its flavors.
