- DESCRIPTION: The valorization of native vines also through the rediscovery of ancient biotypes, the experimentation in the vineyard in the selection of clones and in the extreme care to identify the most suitable soil, have always represented the salient elements of our work as winemakers.
Milazzo Excellent Rosè Extra Dry Bio is an example of this. An ancient Calabrese biotype that has always been cultivated on these hills which becomes the heart of our rosé wines and sparkling wines.
A FAMILY STORY
For the Milazzos , producing wines is a true "family matter" which made them the first producers of sparkling wines with the classic method in Sicily.
A path that continues in the name of valorising the company tradition, with Giuseppina Milazzo and Saverio Lo Leggio, a couple in life, united in the desire to give continuity to Milazzo production.
Among the first Sicilian winemakers , between the end of the seventies and the beginning of the eighties, to enhance winemaking from native Sicilian vines.
Over the years, this has allowed, together with other excellent names, the recovery of the island's winemaking tradition without neglecting experimentation and innovation, which has led, among others, to the adoption of Chardonnay grapes in Sicily with the precise intention of arriving at produce a great SICILIAN Classic Method sparkling wine.
A SUSTAINABLE COMPANY: ISO and organic certifications
Being a sustainable company means accepting the challenge of continuous change, working well today to produce better tomorrow.
It is currently also involved in the program for the analysis of the carbon footprint throughout the production chain.
We thus want to guarantee the quality of our work through a path that effectively combines cultivation techniques with low environmental impact and innovation in the different production phases of our classic method wines and sparkling wines.
Our Steps Towards SUSTAINABILITY
Early 1900s – Maria Costanza – family ancestor – strong and strong-willed woman, dedicated herself to the cultivation of vines and winemaking; it was she who supervised all the processing phases.
A small winery in Campobello di Licata but, even then, the wine produced was highly appreciated by local customers.
In the post-war years, the production of wine grapes was accompanied by that of table grapes.
At the end of the sixties, new vineyards for the production of wine grapes replaced the cultivation of table grapes and thus began a new phase in the family history.
The G. Milazzo Agricultural Company was born not simply to make wine and become a profitable business but above all, to be a company devoted to the obsessive search for quality and continuous improvement.
1982: registration of the “Martin Pescatore” brand which was already used, in the post-war years and until the early sixties, for the marketing of table grapes on international markets.
2004: first certification: UNI ENI ISO 14001 for the activation of the Environmental Management System
2007: the long-standing choice of not using synthetic chemicals begins to be certified. In this year the mandatory conversion period begins which will lead to the organic product certification which will end in 2012.
2008: UNI EN ISO 9001 certification for the Quality Management System and UNI EN ISO 22005 for the Traceability of the production chain, which starts from fertilization, pruning and all work in the vineyards, to the production of wines in the cellar, up to deliveries to customers.
2012: Organic certification, which represented the finish line and at the same time the new starting point of our production path which opens us up to new challenges. Our Kingfisher brand is placed alongside the European organic brand. A journey that began in 2007 and concluded in 2012, with the obtaining of the definitive certificate (Certificate n. 2500/I rev. 02). A commitment that concerns not only our 75 hectares of vineyards but the entire Milazzo property, which today has around 110 hectares in total. Every single parcel of the company, even if not under vines, is already certified or in the process of "converting" to ORGANIC CERTIFICATION. A fundamental choice. The only one that allows us, for the future, to continue planting vineyards in compliance with our motto: We guarantee the authenticity of our wines .
2013: a new challenge opens. The one to reduce CO2 (carbon) emissions at every stage of production (from the field to the consumer). We therefore decide to join the Ita.Ca protocol. for the development of a carbon footprint calculation tool, an international "calculator", already used in Italy, Australia, California and New Zealand, specially adapted to the Italian vine and wine production model by researchers and technicians of the SATA group and the University of Milan, in collaboration with Australian colleagues.
2013: participation in the tender announced by the Ministry of the Environment for the analysis of the carbon footprint of consumer products. Another stage completed. Today we are among the 95 Italian companies from different production sectors, and the only Sicilian wine company, admitted to the program. (http://www.minambiente.it/pagina/il-bando-pubblico-2013)
2014: doing business while consuming and polluting less represents a complex challenge from both a scientific and organizational point of view. But we are, first of all, men and women of the earth and we are convinced that we have only one choice: to protect the environment so that it can continue to give us healthy and good fruit. Within the Ministry project we are now engaged in obtaining the ISO/TS 14067 Product Carbon Footprint certification (Certification system of the methodology for the quantification of the product carbon footprint) which will validate the method with which we are collecting and analyzing the data on our CO2 emissions, in order to then identify the best technical solutions for the effective reduction of our "Carbon footprint".
