Passito Pantelleria Ben Rye
Ben Ryè 2016 has a very intense bouquet in which the notes linked to raisins stand out: apricot and candied orange peel. On the palate it offers its proverbial and extraordinary freshness which balances the sweetness.
The Passito di Pantelleria Donnafugata Ben Rye is a sweet and intense wine that represents the maximum expression of the Pantelleria territory. Its main characteristic is the intense and complex aroma of dried fruit, honey and raisins, which goes perfectly with the sweet and enveloping flavour.
The Passito di Pantelleria Donnafugata Ben Rye is made exclusively with Zibibbo grapes, grown on the island of Pantelleria, which are dehydrated in the sun for approximately three weeks. This natural drying process gives the wine a unique structure, rich in aromas and flavors.
The Passito di Pantelleria Donnafugata Ben Rye is perfect to enjoy at the end of a meal, accompanying desserts based on dried fruit or dark chocolate. Furthermore, it is ideal to accompany mature cheeses and foie gras.
The Passito di Pantelleria Donnafugata Ben Rye is presented in an elegant 75 cl case, perfect for a gift or for an important dinner.
- NAME: Sweet natural white - Passito di Pantelleria Doc.
- GRAPES: Zibibbo (Moscat)
- PRODUCTION AREA: Pantelleria Island (south-western Sicily); districts: Khamma, Mulini, Mueggen, Serraglia, Gibbiuna, Barone, Martingana, Bukkuram, Favarotta, Punta Karace, Bugeber, Karuscia.
- TERRAINS: Altitude from 20 to 400 m above sea level; Orography: complex, typically volcanic, with land cultivated mainly on terraces. Soils: sandy of lava origin with a sub-acid or neutral reaction; deep and fertile, well endowed with minerals.
- VINEYARD: The vines are grown in basins using low Pantelleria trees. The Pantelleria sapling vine has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a "creative and sustainable" practice. Planting density of 2,500 plants/ha with a yield of approximately 40 -50 quintals/ha. The average age of the vineyards is around 50-60 years. Some free-standing plants that have survived phylloxera are over 100 years old.
- VINTAGE: With 294 mm of rainfall, against an average* of 448 mm, the 2016 vintage was dry, although not excessively hot. To compensate for the lack of rainfall and help the vineyards achieve an optimal vegetative-productive balance, thinning was carried out which affected up to 30% of the bunches, as occurred for example in the Khamma district. This has allowed, on the one hand, to preserve the vineyard and, on the other, to obtain healthy and well-ripe grapes in line with the company's quality objectives. (*AGRICULTURAL YEAR: in Pantelleria it is considered from 1 October to 30 September of the following year; PRECIPITATIONS: are recorded by the SIAS, Sicilian Agrometeorological Service, and their average is calculated in Pantelleria since 2013.)
- HARVEST: manual harvest in boxes with careful selection of the grapes in the vineyard. The harvest of the grapes intended for the production of Ben Ryè began on August 17th with those intended for drying and ended on September 15th.
- VINIFICATION: Upon reception in the cellar, further selection of the grapes on the vibrating table before soft pressing. Fermentation in steel at controlled temperature; hand-picked and selected raisins are added several times to the fermenting must. During maceration, raisins release their extraordinary heritage of sweetness, freshness and very personal aroma. The winemaking process (fermentation and maceration) lasts over a month. Aging: in tanks for 7 months and at least 12 months in bottle before being marketed.
- ANALYTICAL DATA: alcohol 14.27% vol., total acidity 6.4 g/l., pH: 3.75, residual sugars: 195 g/l.
- TASTING NOTES (03/05/2018): Ben Ryé 2016 has a golden color with bright amber reflections. With a very intense bouquet in which the notes linked to raisins stand out: apricot and candied orange peel; it also presents delicate hints of Mediterranean scrub. On the palate it offers its proverbial and extraordinary freshness which balances the sweetness. The typical taste of dried Zibibbo is joined by countless other fruity sensations of aromatic herbs and honey. Its complexity is enriched by mineral notes and a very long persistence.
- LONGEVITY: over 20 years.
- WHEN YOU WANT: an exclusive and memorable experience. Enjoy unique sensations over time. Enrich your collection with inimitable and long-lived wines. Stand out for your expertise.
- FOOD & WINE: with caramelized duck, blue cheeses, foie gras, dry pastries and signature chocolate. Extraordinary on its own, as a meditation wine. Serve it in medium-sized glasses, with slight flare, it can be uncorked at the moment. Excellent at 14°C.

And the island wind brings with it a load of scents so intense that you can touch them. The signature label celebrates the love, care and effort of heroic viticulture on a unique and fascinating island. A sweet and enveloping portrait that reveals its essence.
