Since 1800, we have been cultivating excellence.
The Quignones Winery was born from the passionate and gentle work of Alfredo Quignones, who continues a project begun by his great-great-grandfather in the 19th century. Today, his focus is on producing natural wines that offer a different expression of Sicily, through the use of rare grape varieties and unique winemaking and aging methods.
We are proudly small, producing wine and extra virgin olive oil, following traditional practices such as rigorous hand-harvesting and patient winemaking.
Our wines are the fruit of a love story: the love between the hills where our vines ripen and the sea. They've been side by side for centuries.
The hill, cloaked in the sun and superb nature, sighs as it gazes at the immense sea, which watches it from afar, blowing a breeze upon it, sometimes gentle, sometimes strong, laden with its scent.
Ancient landscapes which extend over 100 hectares in the most authentic and least known Sicily, lands filled with millennia of history, and that have belonged to the Quignones family for over 2 centuries.
Making good wine takes time. We bottle it professionally, so you can enjoy it, combining our time with yours: perhaps this is the magic a bottle of wine can create.
There are no secrets, it's just love, nature, time and effort.
Over two centuries of history and good family traditions.
It was Baron Raffaele Quignones, great-great-grandfather of the current owner, who purchased the vast property called Tenuta d'Apaforte.
In this charming setting, characterized by centuries-old olive trees, vast almond groves, and particularly calcareous soil, stood a vineyard. It produced the intense purple grapes with their typically loose bunches, traditionally known as Calabrese.
But as time passed, when the almond groves gave way to vineyards, it was discovered that the precious Nero d'Avola grape inhabited those lands.
Today, Alfredo Quignones follows in the footsteps of his father, who in the early 70s of the last century decided to convert part of the company specializing in the cultivation of vines, carrying on a a tradition that has now become centuries-old.
And so the ancient pergola-trained vineyards were converted into long rows of espaliers that house the Nero d'Avola and Inzolia vines, alongside cultivars such as Chardonnay, Fiano, Syrah, and Petit Verdot, thus promoting the excellence that is a symbol of the Mediterranean region.
All the nuances of unspoiled nature, in a glass of wine.
The one hundred hectares of our lands, of a predominantly calcareous nature, extend in the south of Sicily, more precisely in Licata, in the province of Agrigento.
Our vineyards are located on the slopes of the Sant'Oliva hill and extend up to its summit, overlooking the vast Licata plain, which extends to the sandy Mediterranean coast.
Facing South-West, The plants enjoy the warmth of the sun for most of the day.
Furthermore, Thanks to their proximity to the sea, they are constantly refreshed by the light sea breezes typical of the Mediterranean, giving the grapes truly special characteristics.
